Free Historic Digital Assets

Where does one get free historic digital assets for compositing? I am talking about free public domain digital photos that can be used for compositing into digital artwork. Historic or vintage photos like old documents, maps, portraits and the like can really add flair to your photography and digital artwork, and this video presents multiple locations where they can be had for free.
